How Power Specifications Differ: Desktop vs. Laptop
When comparing power consumption, the biggest difference lies in voltage regulation and thermal limitations. A desktop PC utilizes a large, modular power supply (PSU) with cooling fans, allowing components to run at their maximum rated thermal design power (TDP). An NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080 desktop card runs at a 400W Total Board Power (TBP) budget and can spike higher.
Laptops, however, run on tightly constrained thermal envelopes. A mobile "RTX 5080 Laptop" GPU typically runs at a 80W–150W TGP (Total Graphics Power) limit. While mobile chips use similar architecture names, they are severely detuned to run cooler and consume less power.
